What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are compounds found naturally in all types of plants that determine their smell, but they also have beneficial effects on health and wellness. Terpenes have been used for thousands of years within the world of aromatherapy. The terpenes within plants like peppermint, lavender, lemon and garlic are familiar to most people, and have healthful benefits.

Cannabis contains over 100 different types of terpenes.  Terpenes interact with the naturally occurring cannabinoids, like CBD, to enhance or modify their results. The overall effect of this rich combination of terpenes and cannabinoids is known as the entourage effect, because they are working together, synergistically.  With cannabis, these cannabinoids and terpenes work together to produce a range of effects which, when combined, is greater than their individual effects.

Research is ongoing in this field, and more needs to be understood, but researchers in the cannabis field have concluded that terpenes help to enhance the benefits of cannabinoids, more so than if CBD is consumed alone.
